Tell me more about the plums!
They're similar to apricots, but pickled, and so sour and salty you feel like your face is going to fall off.
The Japanese love pairings of extremely bland foods (ex: a bowl of white rice) with extremely flavorful ones like pickled veg. I've also heard tell that pickles stimulate digestion, but I eat them because they are delicious.
When I make onigiri (rice balls, a popular Japanese snack food) I put an umeboshi in the center of each. And I often eat them as a side when I'm having plain rice.
